Township Board Packet Now Available The Township Board Packet for the February 7, 2012, regular meeting is now available as a PDF file. Township Board Packet for February 7, 2012 Taxes Due Winter property taxes in Meridian Township are due by 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2012. Ice Fishing Event Cancelled Meridian Township’s Parks & Recreation Department is announcing the cancellation of the Meridian Ice Fishing Derby scheduled for Saturday, February 11th at Central Park due to weather conditions. Absentee Ballot Information Ballots are now available to residents who wish to vote absentee in the closed Presidential Primary Election on February 28. Absentee ballot applications were recently mailed to qualified residents. Ballots will be mailed starting January 20 to residents who have returned their applications up to that date, and then daily as applications are received. When requesting an absentee ballot, residents must select ONE ballot type (Republican or Democratic) before 2012 Youth Citizens' Police Academy The Meridian Township Police Department is currently seeking applicants for the 2012 Youth Citizens’ Academy. The Academy is offered to students from area high schools, and it is modeled after the Department’s very popular Citizens’ Academy. Participants will meet Thursday evenings, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., from February 9 to March 22 at the Meridian Township Public Safety Building. Presidential Primary Election Information Election Day in Meridian Township is Tuesday, February 28. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 30 was the last day to register to vote in this Election. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, a United States citizen, a resident of Michigan and a resident of Meridian Township. To register to vote, residents can visit a Secretary of State Branch Office, Ingham County Clerk’s Office or the Meridian Township Clerk’s Office. Ballot Tabulator Legal Ad 2/2/12 Wolverine Pipe Line Maintenance The Wolverine Pipe Line Company will be contracting work to clear easements of brush along the Wolverine Pipe Line in Meridian Township. Township Deer Harvest Continues At the January 3 Township Board meeting, the Board voted to extend the 2011 deer harvest into 2012. Meridian Township then received a Damage Control Permit from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to conduct an extended deer harvest through February 29, 2012. Township Board Proposed Motion Township Board Motion Amendment A total of 41 deer were harvested during the regular managed hunt in 2011. Summary of 2011 Managed Deer Hunt Winter Sidewalk Ordinance Meridian Township reminds residents of snow removal rules. It is the duty of occupants and/or property owners to keep adjecent sidewalks clear of snow or ice within 24 hours of the cessation of a snowfall. Winter Farmers' Market The Winter Farmers' Market will be held in the JC Penney Corridor of the Meridian Mall on the following Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. February 18 March 3, 17, & 31 April 14 Detroit Piston & Detroit Red Wing Tickets The Meridian Township Parks and Recreation Department, the Michigan Recreation and Park Association (MRPA), the Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Red Wings are pleased to announce a special partnership for the 2011 - 12 basketball and hockey seasons. Special ticket savings are available for residents and employees of Meridian Township for select games throughout the season. Recycling Opportunities Increase In Meridian Township The Meridian Recycling Center has expanded hours to give residents more opportunities for both recycling and trash disposal. The Center is located at 5976 E. Lake Drive in Haslett. New items being accepted include some #3, #4, #5, and #6 plastics and Styrofoam(tm) (i.e. expanded polystyrene). Protecting Meridian Township’s Wetlands Meridian Township shares wetland jurisdiction and regulation with the State of Michigan. The Township ordinance of “no net loss” of wetlands means that wetlands drained or filled must be replaced by a wetland of equal size. This includes wetlands as small as .25 acres. The new Wetland Brochure has been completed and approved by the Environmental Commission. Environmental Stewardship Awards The purpose of the Environmental Stewardship Awards (ESA) is to recognize and honor those who have significantly contributed to the conservation of natural resources and the protection of the environment of Meridian Township. All nominations are due by March 1, 2012. Awards are scheduled to be presented in spring 2012. 2012 Township Budget The 2012 Budget was approved by the Township Board at it's Budget Meeting on Tuesday, October 18, 2011.
