Meridian Township Announces Interim Fire Chief
Lori Schafer Becomes First Female Fire Chief
Meridian Township, MI – Township Fire Chief Fred Cowper is retiring from his position after almost 20 years of service to the community. Township Manager Frank Walsh and an internal selection committee chose Lori Schafer to serve as Interim Fire Chief from January 1, 2018 – June 30, 2018 when a full time Fire Chief will be selected. The internal selection committee interviewed three (3) candidates; all Meridian Township Fire Department retirees:
David Harper, Retired MTFD Assistant Fire Chief
Greg Hammond, Retired MTFD EMS Coordinator/Captain
Lori Schafer, Retired MTFD Battalion Chief
“We had excellent candidates who know and understand the makeup of our department. Interim Chief Lori Schafer will be introduced at the December 5, 2017 Meridian Township Board meeting at 6:00 pm,” said Township Manager, Frank Walsh.
Lori Schafer served on the Meridian Township Fire Department from 1989 – 2014. She managed three (3) stations including supervision of Fire Officers and functioned as Incident Commander at multiple fire, rescue and EMS calls. Her career has spanned 25 years beginning as a Firefighter/Paramedic with promotions to Lieutenant, Captain and ending as Battalion Chief for Meridian Township. “We welcome Lori Schafer back to the Meridian Team and to serve our Prime Community,” stated Manager Walsh.
