Meridian Township, MI – The Meridian Township Board renewed a two year contract ending in 2020 for Township Manager, Frank Walsh at the Township Board meeting on January 9, 2018. The Township Board voted unanimously, 7 – 0 to renew his contract at the same salary increase level that Township employees received at 2%.

Township Manager Walsh rejected a 4% salary increase during board deliberations. “When I negotiated contracts for the employees I made a verbal promise to them offering a 2% increase,” said Manager Walsh. “The success we had last year was based on everyone together, we’re all a team and I’m not above that team.”

During 2017, Manager Walsh led the Township to the establishment of a Brownfield Development Authority and Corridor Improvement Authority, he helped resolve the MERS pension debt within a 10 year plan, saw an increase of 29.9% in new investments from $60,921,746 in 2016 to $79,139,593 in 2017 and worked with the adoption of the 2018 Master Plan that will help spearhead the direction for revitalizing core business districts in the Township.

“He did put his name on the line with our bargaining units, he did give his word that he would keep his raise at 2%,” stated Phil Deschaine, Township Board Trustee. “You see comparable communities and I’d venture that none of them were as nearly successful in 2017 as this community was.”

Walsh will serve 5 years with the Township on May 8, 2018.
