Meridian Township Selects New Fire Chief

On Wednesday, June 6th Township Manager Frank Walsh announced selection of the new Meridian Township Fire Chief, Mike Hamel.

The public and media are invited to a meet and greet event with Mike Hamel.
Monday, June 11th at 11:00 am
Meridian Township Town Hall Room, 5151 Marsh Rd., Okemos.


“I feel very blessed and honored to be offered the job. I am very excited to be joining this well organized and professional team,” said Mike Hamel. “I look forward to bringing the department to the next level,” stated Mike Hamel.

Mike brings 25 years of fire service to Meridian Township. He served for two years as Emergency Management and Continuity of Operations Manager for the Lansing Board of Water and Light. Prior to that he served Lansing Fire Department from 1992 – 2016, including Emergency Management Chief and Assistant Fire Chief.

“We are pleased to welcome Chief Hamel to our team. Mike will take our department to the next level and represent Meridian Township in a professional, humble and compassionate manner,” stated Township Manager Frank Walsh.

The application process for a new Township Fire Chief began on April 6th. The Township received a total of 39 applications. Selection of the new Chief will be before The Meridian Township Board for consideration at the June 19th Meridian Township Board Meeting. Chief Hamel is anticipated to begin in early July.
