Fire Department Upgrades Jaws of Life

Post Date:01/07/2019

The Meridian Township Fire Department will begin the New Year with new extrication equipment (Jaws of Life).

After 20 years of use, the Fire Department decided the machine’s tool’s accuracy and function ability called for a replacement. The previous Jaws of Life equipment was used at every car accident, or extrication, the Department responded to. Over the two decades the previous equipment was used hundreds of times.

The Township Fire Department worked with the Haslett-Okemos Rotary on grant funding of $10,000 in combination of additional funding that was approved by the Township Board for $18,555. The funding helped with purchase of the Jaws of Life tools, gasoline pump, extension hoses and fittings.

“It is very exciting that our community and Rotary have supported the Meridian Township Fire Department for the purchase of new extrication equipment and support our Mission to protect the citizens we serve,” said Township Fire Chief Mike Hamel. “Having new equipment that will perform and function without fail is important and supports a rapid extrication of a citizen that could be trapped in a vehicle or under a heavy object.”

This equipment upgrade will support the Fire Department with effectively extricating citizens from severe accidents in the Township, as well as help provide mutual aid to Alaiedon, Bath, Delhi, East Lansing and Williamston communities, including Interstates 96 and 69.
