The Friends of Historic Meridian will be hosting a Speaker Series on Wednesday, October 22 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Meridian Historical Village Chapel (5151 Marsh Road, Okemos).
Learn from David Siwick about the history of Meridian Township's name and land in the lecture, "It is in the Name: The Michigan Meridian, Land Survey and how Meridian Township got its Name."
This presentation explores the namesake of Meridian Township - the land survey of Michigan conducted during the territorial and early statehood period, centered around the Meridian survey line, and the establishment of the boustrophedonical section number system. Topics covered include an overview of the establishment of the Northwest Territory, the Ordinance of 1784, Land Ordinance of 1785, and how these early laws laid the foundation for virtually all land surveys and sales in Michigan, with the principal survey meridian located where Meridian Township lies now. Additionally, the history behind naming Meridian Township is also discussed.
David Siwick has taught Michigan history, US history and world civ courses at Lansing Community College for 19 years. He has a wide ranging interest in local history subjects, and hosts a podcast on Lansing Community College’s LCC Connect platform, called "Lanstories."
