Plant a Tree in 2020!

Spring is a great time to plant trees.  Meridian Township is teaming up with local partners and residents to plant dozens of trees this weekend!  The first 40-50 visitors to the Meridian Township Farmers’ Market (Information Table) on Saturday, May 23rd from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm will receive a free sapling and “adoption papers" as part of Meridian Township's Tree Planting Initiative.  Information about ecological lawn care, recycling and other green practices will also be distributed. Any leftover trees will be planted in Meridian Township Parks or Land Preserves.

The tree saplings and shrubs are Michigan Natives and donated by Ingham Conservation District. More information here:

Over 20 years, one red maple can:

  • Remove 3,100 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

  • Reduce the emissions of 5,500 pounds of carbon dioxide and 30 pounds of air pollution from a power plant.

  • Save 570 kWh of electricity and 20 MMBtu of fuel for cooling and heating.

  • Intercept 27,000 gallons of rainfall and avoid 4,800 gallons of runoff.

  • Filter 15 pounds of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide from the air we breathe.

Meridian’s Tree Team hopes to launch additional tree planting initiatives in the fall and in 2021.  For more information, contact 517.853.4466.
