Meridian Township to Begin Hydrant Flushing on September 8

Beginning on Tuesday, September 8, the Meridian Township Department of Public Works (DPW) will begin conducting hydrant flushing and winterization throughout the Township. Please click here to access the 2026 hydrant flushing map schedule.

Hydrant flushing is an important preventive maintenance activity that allows DPW staff to test hydrants, identify needed repairs, and remove sediment and mineral buildup from the water distribution system before winter weather arrives.

Residents in areas where flushing is taking place may notice temporary water discoloration or reduced water pressure. The discoloration is harmless and is caused by naturally occurring mineral deposits being stirred up during the flushing process.

Throughout flushing, residents are encouraged to:

  • Avoid using water during flushing, if possible.
  • Run cold water taps for several minutes, or until water runs clear, if discoloration occurs.
  • Wait until water runs clear before running dishwashers or washing machines.
  • Clean faucet screens if water pressure remains low after flushing.

If water quality issues persist for more than four hours after flushing is complete, contact the Department of Public Works at 517.853.4440 or dpw@meridian.mi.us.

The Township maintains approximately 2,200 hydrants as part of its water distribution system, and this flushing is expected to take 3-4 weeks to complete.
