Unlike cities and villages, townships in Michigan are not responsible for maintaining their roads. The following government bodies perform all road construction and maintenance work in Meridian Township:

Current Road Construction Updates:

UPDATE (8/30/26)

Paving on Sunday, August 30, on Hulett Road was canceled due to rain and has been rescheduled for Monday, August 31.

The Township's contractor will pave and restore all asphalt driveways from Tuesday, September 1 to Saturday, September 5.
Weather-dependent, the Township's contractors will be performing the following work on Hulett Road from Okemos Road to Bennett Road from Monday, August 24, to Saturday, September 5:
  • August 24: Finish pouring concrete.
  • August 25 to August 28: Allow concrete to cure and grade the road to prepare for paving. The road will be graded well prior to the first day of school on Wednesday, August 26.
  • August 29 and August 30: Pave the first of two layers of asphalt.
  • August 31 to September 5: Restore asphalt and concrete driveways.

Hulett Road will be closed to northbound traffic from Saturday, August 29 to Saturday, September 5. Southbound traffic will be maintained on the side of the road that is not actively being paved.

All school bus routes are southbound only, but the first two paving dates are currently scheduled over a weekend.

Once all driveways have been restored, the Township will announce the two scheduled dates to pave the second and final layer of asphalt on Hulett Road.

After paving is complete, we will construct gravel shoulders, restore grass, apply pavement markings to Hulett Road, install new signage, and adjust mailboxes as needed.

Past Road Construction Updates:

Second Update (5/18/26):

The Township currently anticipates closing Washington Heights Avenue to all traffic on Tuesday, May 26.
The Washington Heights Avenue closure is expected to last 1-2 weeks. The exact closure date will be subject to weather conditions.

The Township will continue to publish construction schedule updates as they are known.

Original Update (5/15/26):

The resurfacing of Washington Heights Avenue will begin shortly after Memorial Day (Monday, May 25). Manholes will be lowered while the road is open to traffic.

Washington Heights Avenue will be closed to all traffic during the resurfacing work, which is expected to take 1-2 weeks to complete.

The date that the closure is scheduled to begin will be published the week of May 18. The exact closure date will be subject to weather conditions. The Township will publish construction schedule updates as they are known.

Please do not go around any barricades. Keeping the road closed to traffic is very important to protect the structural integrity of the new road and your vehicle.

The map below shows which drives will be closed and which will be open during the closure, including a temporary entrance/exit that will be constructed to serve 1804 & 1806 Hamilton Road.

We sincerely apologize in advance for any inconvenience caused during construction. We appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to improve our community.

The Township will be closing the westbound lane of Kinawa Drive at the Dobie Road intersection on Tuesday, May 26 beginning at 4:30 pm to correct a trip hazard on the pathway system at the northwest corner of this intersection.

The work should only take 2-3 hours to complete. During this short lane closure, motorists will not be able to turn onto westbound Kinawa Drive from northbound or southbound Dobie Road. The detour is Dobie Road, Jolly Road, and Okemos Road.

Second Update (5/15/26):

To complete the work and reopen the railroad crossing ASAP, the crossing will be closed to pedestrians as well.

We recognize that closing the railroad crossing to pedestrians is not ideal, but the closure would need to remain in place much longer to maintain pedestrian access.

Efforts were made to schedule this work after the K-12 school year had concluded. For safety, CSX needs to replace portions of the rail on an emergency basis, and waiting until the K-12 school year ended wasn't feasible.

Original Update (5/12/26 at 2:30 pm):

Beginning at 7:00 am on Tuesday, May 19, CSX will close their railroad crossing on Okemos Road between Hulett Road and Bennett Road for emergency repairs. This closure will be in place through Thursday, May 21.

The posted detour for northbound and southbound Okemos Road traffic will be Bennett Road, Hagadorn Road, and Mount Hope Road, as shown by the blue arrows on the map.

Okemos Road will remain open to local traffic between Mount Hope Road and Bennett Road; however, Okemos Road will have a hard closure at the CSX railroad crossing.

We appreciate your patience during this emergency closure and will provide updates as they become available.

Beginning the week of May 18 or May 25, the Ingham County Drain Commissioner's Office will implement an emergency road closure at the intersection of Lake Lansing Road and Sleepy Hollow Lane.

Sleepy Hollow Lane from Isaac Lane to Lake Lansing Road will be closed to traffic, as will the westbound lane of Lake Lansing Road. Two-way traffic will be maintained on Lake Lansing Road under traffic control, as indicated on the map.

This closure is necessary for work on the existing storm drains to alleviate flooding on properties along Sleepy Hollow Lane.

This work is anticipated to take 30 days to complete, weather dependent. We will continue to post updates as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience.

UPDATE (May 19, 9:00 pm)

East Lake Drive is now open.

As of today, May 18 at 5:00 pm, East Lake Drive from north of the Meridian Recycling Center to Woodwind Trail is closed due to downed power lines.

Please avoid the area and seek alternate routes. We will provide additional updates as they become available.

UPDATE (May 19, 4:00 pm)

The boardwalk has been repaired and is now open. Thank you for your patience!

Original Post:

As of Monday, May 18, at 5:00 pm, the Okemos Road boardwalk is temporarily closed after fallen tree limbs damaged the safety railing.

Please avoid the boardwalk and do not attempt to use it at this time. Our crews will begin cleanup and repairs tomorrow morning.

We appreciate your patience and will post another update once it reopens!

Original Update: (5/5/26 at 12:00 pm)

Beginning Wednesday, May 6 at 8:00 am, Hagadorn Road will be closed from Wilson road to Hannah Boulevard to repair the CN railroad tracks.

This closure is expected to be in place through Thursday, May 7.

Closure Detours:

  • Hagadorn Road > Grand River Avenue > Okemos Road
  • Hagadorn Road > Mt. Hope Road > Okemos Road

Park Lake Road is now open. Thank you for your patience!

Due to the weather forecast, the Township will have to keep the Park Lake Road and Roseland Avenue closure in place until the road can be paved on Wednesday, April 29, weather permitting.

Original Update: (4/23/26 at 10:30 am)

Beginning on Thursday, April 23, Park Lake Road will be closed to through traffic at the Roseland Avenue intersection. The remainder of Park Lake Road from Grand River Avenue to Burcham Drive will be open to local traffic only.

This closure is for scheduled work on the Township’s water distribution system. Weather permitting, this closure is expected to be in place until Friday, April 24, or Saturday, April 25.

Another partial closure date will be necessary in the future to pave this portion of Park Lake Road.

The Township will publish updates to this post as the closure schedule is finalized.

All roads listed below, as well as Phase I of the MSU to Lake Lansing Trail, are now open.

Ferguson, Legg, Ottawa Hills, and Wonch Parks remain closed at this time.

Fourth Update (4/20/26 at 12:45 pm)

The intersection of Tacoma Blvd and Birchwood Drive is now open. The following roads, trails, and parks are still closed:

  • Okemos Road between the CN railroad tracks and Central Park Drive
  • Nakoma Drive and Ottawa Drive Intersection
  • Hillcrest Avenue and Seminole Drive Intersection
  • Ferguson, Legg, Ottawa Hills, and Wonch Parks
  • Phase I of the MSU to Lake Lansing Trail

The intersection of Tacoma Blvd and Birchwood Drive in the Tacoma Hills Neighborhood is closed due to flooding.

All roads, parks, and trails listed below are still closed. We will continue to monitor their conditions and provide updates as they become available.

Original Update: (4/16/26 at 9:00 am)

Due to heavy rainfall, several roads, parks, and trails in Meridian Township are closed. The following areas are currently flooded and impassable:
  • Okemos Road between the CN railroad tracks and Central Park Drive
  • Nakoma Drive and Ottawa Drive Intersection
  • Hillcrest Avenue and Seminole Drive Intersection
  • Ferguson, Legg, Ottawa Hills, and Wonch Parks
  • Phase I of the MSU to Lake Lansing Trail

This list is not comprehensive and will be updated as new information becomes available.

Please avoid any flooded areas in the Township parks and trails system, especially those located along the Red Cedar River. If you see water covering the roadway, turn around and do not attempt to drive through.

If you encounter a flooded road, please call the Ingham County Road Department at 517.676.9722.

We will continue to assess road conditions and provide updates as they become available.

Fourth Update (4/21 at 10:00 am)

Beginning at 4:30 pm today, Kinawa Drive will be closed between Dobie Road and Jonquil Lane.

This closure will allow our contractor to repair the road after last week's water main break and should take approximately 2-3 hours to complete.

Dobie Road will remain open to both northbound and southbound traffic during the repairs. The traffic signal at Kinawa Drive and Dobie Road will operate in a flashing red mode; please treat this intersection as a four-way stop.

The intersection of Kinawa Drive and Dobie Road is now open.

Second Update (4/17/26 at 1:30 pm)

Kinawa Drive, from Dobie Road to Jonquil Lane, is closed for water main repairs.

Anyone looking to access the subdivision from Dobie Road can do so on Country View Drive.

Water service is being restored now. The road will be closed for 3 to 4 hours while the repair is made.

Original Update: (4/17/26 at 11:30 am)

There is a water main break at the intersection of Kinawa Drive and Dobie Road. Some customers and businesses near this intersection will experience low water pressure during the repair, but do not need to limit water use.

The Township will need to shift traffic at this intersection. Please expect delays when traveling through this intersection, and avoid it if possible.

Further updates regarding which lanes will be closed will be shared as more information becomes available. The repair is expected to take 4 to 6 hours to complete.

Latest Update: (4/23/26 at 11:00 am)

Due to the significant amount of precipitation in April, work on this repair cannot begin until the groundwater recedes. 

The Ingham County Drain Commissioner’s Office is monitoring the area to assess when work can begin. The outer southbound lane of Okemos Road will remain closed because reopening the roadway is not safe until the repair is complete. The center turn lane will also be closed off once work begins.

We appreciate everyone’s patience while the Ingham County Drain Commissioner’s Office completes this emergency repair to the storm drain.

Second Update: (4/8/26 at 3:00 pm)

Due to the significant amount of precipitation over the weekend, work on this repair cannot begin until the groundwater recedes.

The Ingham County Drain Commissioner’s Office is monitoring the area to assess when work can begin. The outer southbound lane and the center turn lane on Okemos Road will remain closed, as reopening the roadway is not safe until the repair is complete.

We appreciate everyone’s patience while the Ingham County Drain Commissioner’s Office completes this emergency repair to the storm drain.

Original Update: (4/5/26 at 9:00 am)

Weather permitting, the Ingham County Drain Commissioner’s Office will begin storm sewer repairs on Okemos Road starting Monday, April 6, at 7:00 am.

To complete this repair, the inner southbound lane and the center turn lane on Okemos Road will be closed to traffic from just north of Grand River Avenue to just past the 5/3 Bank.

During construction, both northbound lanes and the outer southbound lane will remain open. Motorists should anticipate delays when traveling through the area.

Repairs are expected to take approximately 1-3 weeks to complete. The Township will provide construction schedule updates as more information becomes available.

Third Update (4/13/26)

The northbound lane closures on Okemos Road just north of Club Meridian Drive will reopen sometime today, Monday, April 13.

Second Update (4/10/26 at 12:00 pm)

Beginning today, April 10, both northbound lanes of Okemos Road will be closed to traffic just north of Club Meridian Drive. One northbound lane will be maintained in the center turn lane. Motorists should expect minor delays when traveling through this area.

The northbound lanes are closed for an emergency storm drain repair being completed by the Ingham County Drain Commissioner’s Office. The repair and concrete cure time is expected to take 1-2 weeks.

Original Update: (4/8/26 at 4:00 pm)

Beginning today, April 8, the outer northbound lane of Okemos Road will be closed to traffic from just north of Club Meridian Drive to 3890 Okemos Road.

The lane will be closed for an emergency storm drain repair being completed by the Ingham County Drain Commissioner’s Office.

There is a water main break at 1620 Haslett Road. Some residential customers and businesses near the Marsh Road/Haslett Road intersection will experience low water pressure during the repair, but do not need to limit water use.

The westbound lane of Haslett Road will be closed, with westbound traffic shifting into the center turn lane in front of Biggby Coffee.

The repair is expected to take 3-5 hours to complete. We will update this post once water service has been restored.
