Food Scraps & Food Resources

The Green Meridian Team and Meridian Township Farmers' Market have partnered to provide food scrap recycling at the Market. You drop off your food scraps and compostable containers (see “Restrictions” below) in the bright green carts. Hammond Farms comes and picks them up and turns them into compost. We reduce methane emissions into the atmosphere and waste going into the landfill.

The program is open to all Meridian Township residents and Market vendors.

How It Works
  1. Bring your container (1-2 gallons/week, please) of food scraps to the Meridian Township Farmers' Market during Market hours & look for the green cart near the bathroom building.
  2. Dump your container.
  3. Help us cover our costs to provide this program by signing up for a quarterly or yearly subscription or making a $1/gallon donation each time at the Market office. (See “How to Support” below)
Where are Green Carts located?
  • Outdoor Market Days - The Green Carts will be located in a visible location left of the Market stage near the brick building with the Market murals.
  • Non-market Days/Indoor Market Season – The Green Carts will be located BEHIND the brick building with the murals left of the Market stage.
Restrictions
  • No Plastic, metal, or other non-organic materials
  • “Compostable Plastic” can be brought separately
  • No waxed paper cartons or containers
Allowed Items
  • Leftover produce
  • Food cooked/raw in any form
  • Paper napkins & paper towel
  • Cardboard/compostable to-go containers
How to Support the Program
  • While we still will take donations at the Market, we are requesting people using the program try paying a nominal fee for a Food Scrap subscription.
  • You may pay by credit/debit card online or by check. You may pay by the year or the quarter.

To pay by check: Send a check to or drop off a check at the Food Waste Program
c/o Meridian Parks Dept., 2100 Gaylord C. Smith Ct., Haslett, MI 48840
Make the check payable to "Meridian Township." If Quarterly – indicate which quarter in the memo.

To pay by cash: Go to the Market office on Market day or to the Meridian Parks office at the address above.

To pay online: Go HERE, and on the page, click the "+" next to “Food Composting” and select which option you would like to purchase. Then you will be prompted to register and get an account to pay.

Options
  • Quarterly to drop off 1 ($15/qtr) or 2 ($30/qtr) gallons of food waste per week for 3 months
  • Annually - to drop off 1 ($50/yr) or 2 ($100/yr) gallons of food waste per week

The Meridian Township Farmers' Market is more than just a place to shop. It’s also home to the Meridian Market Gleaning Program, which tackles food waste and feeds our community.

How it Works
  1. Beginning in June, eligible vendors (licensed vendors and produce farmers) donate food at the end of the market on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
  2. When the market opens for the day, volunteers at the gleaning table display bowls of produce that were purchased from the eligible vendors. For just $5, shoppers can select an item and place it in the donation box.
  3. Volunteers at the end of the market collect, weigh, organize, and coordinate with the various recipient organizations for pickup on that same day or from a walk-in cooler at the start of the week.
Who are the recipients?
  • Cristo Rey Community Center
  • Edgewood Village Housing Non-profit
  • First Presbyterian Church Food Pantry
  • Haslett Community Church Pantry
  • Southside Community Kitchen
  • St. John Church Food Cupboard
  • Williamston Food Bank
An Invitation

If you'd like to learn more about this program or join the efforts, stop by the gleaning table at the outdoor Saturday farmers' market. The booth will be open from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. You can also view the volunteer signup at the following link: Gleaning Volunteer Signup Link.

For questions, please contact Sue Ziara at suez1166@gmail.com.

History
  • In 2022, volunteers and vendors provided 4,790 pounds of produce and baked goods to recipient organizations.
  • In 2023, volunteers, vendors, and customers provided 6,945 pounds of produce and baked goods to recipient organizations, with 844 pounds donated by customers.
  • In 2024, volunteers, vendors, and customers provided 8,611 pounds of produce and baked goods, with 1,322 pounds donated by customers.
What's next?

2025 should be another productive season that addresses hunger in the community while also reducing food waste. This season, local gardeners are being encouraged to donate excess from their gardens to the gleaning table at the Meridian Township Farmers' Market.

Throughout the month of May, interested gardeners will receive free seed packets provided by the Greater Lansing Food Bank Garden Project and are encouraged to Grow a Row of produce that will be donated to the recipient organizations listed above.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients can use their Michigan Bridge Card/EBT card at the Meridian Township Farmers’ Market to obtain wooden tokens for the purchase garden plants (e.g. tomato seedlings) and all foods except prepared meals. The Market also accepts and provides Double Up Food Bucks for the purchase of fresh produce and herbs and garden plants. WIC Project FRESH and Senior Project FRESH/Market FRESH no longer use coupons, but require a card you swipe at the vendor stall.
