Voting Options
Option #1: Absentee Voting
  • Step 1: Apply for an absentee ballot. This can be done multiple ways:
    • Fill out an application online at mvic.sos.state.mi.us/AVApplication.
    • Fill out the Michigan Absent Voter Ballot Application digitally and email it to ClerksOffice@meridian.mi.us.
    • Stop in-person at the Meridian Township Clerk's Office and request an application.
    • Applications can be returned by email, mail, or in one of the four ballot drop boxes listed above.
  • Step 2: Return your absentee ballot using one of the following methods:
    • Mail to the Meridian Township Clerk’s Office at 5151 Marsh Road, Okemos, MI 48864. No postage is needed and ballots must be received by 8:00 pm on Election Day.
    • Drop off at one of four ballot drop boxes by 8:00 pm on Election Day (each drop box is secured to ground with 24/7 video surveillance).
    • Vote your absentee ballot in-person during the early voting period.

Option #2: In-Person Early Voting

All qualified, verified, registered voters have the option to vote early. For the August 5, special election, early voting will be available from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm starting on Friday, August 1 and lasting through Sunday, August 3.

Meridian Township’s early voting site is the Town Hall Room of the Meridian Township Municipal Building (5151 Marsh Road, Okemos).

An early voting site operates similarly to a polling location that voters would use on Election Day. Early voters will be issued a ballot where they will cast their vote and insert it into the tabulator at the early voting site. Anyone voting with an absentee ballot can also return their ballot to the early voting site.

Option #3: Vote on Election Day at your Polling Location

All qualified, verified, registered voters have the option to vote in-person on Election Day.

Find your polling location at mi.gov/vote.

Your Voter Information Card issued in 2022 to all Meridian Township voters has your polling location listed on it. If you need a new card, please email ClerksOffice@meridian.mi.us.

    Military and Overseas Voters

The Uniformed and Overseas Civilian Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) allows for eligible voters living overseas, and members of our armed forces, to register to vote by filling out the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) or the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB).

UOCAVA voters must complete a FPCA each year to receive a ballot for each election during that year. This is to help ensure your ballot will be sent out with enough time to allow for overseas mail.

The application is available online by visiting the Federal Voting Assistance Program website: www.fvap.gov/Michigan

Once completed, please return your signed application to the Meridian Township Clerk's Office by email, mail, or fax. Information for each option is provided below:

    Accessible Voting

    Accessible Absentee Ballots:

    • Voters with disabilities can apply for an accessible electronic absentee ballot that can be filled out electronically, printed, and then returned to the Clerk’s office. Voters may also opt in to the permanent accessible ballot list through the accessible ballot application. Those on this list will automatically receive an accessible absentee ballot from the Clerk’s office for every future election they are eligible to vote in. To apply online for this accessible ballot visit the link below:
    • Accessible Ballot for Voters with Disabilities

    Accessible Voting Machines:

    • Every polling place provides a Voter Assist Terminal (VAT) that is available to all voters, including those with disabilities. This machine assists voters in marking their ballots. While it does not count votes, it accurately marks the voter's selections. Once marked, the ballot will be printed and can then be tabulated and counted in the same fashion as all ballots.

For additional information about accessible voting, visit michigan.gov/sos/resources/accessibility-and-accommodations.

We have also partnered with Able Eyes to provide virtual tours of our public buildings. To view a tour of the Meridian Township Municipal Building, where the Clerk's Office is located, please visit the link below:

    Election FAQs
How will address change requests be handled and/or monitored between a voter's former and new locations?

Voter addresses will transfer through the Qualified Voter File, Michigan's maintained voter database, which houses all of the information on past and present voters. This is done through voter registration or change of address forms. If a voter moves out of state, it is their responsibility to update their voter registration status with the clerk, though this is also done through Secretary of State Driver’s License imports.

In situations where a voter moves out of the country, they are legally allowed to vote at their last address in the United States. The Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website provides more information for this circumstance: https://www.fvap.gov/michigan.

What happens if a voter moves to a new location or decides to stop voting and never notifies a Clerk's office?

After two general election cycles pass without voting or without any actions taken by the voter, the voter will be marked as inactive in the Qualified Voter File, Michigan's maintained voter database, and scheduled for cancellation.

Why does the absentee ballot application only require certification of statements made in the application via a signature?  How are voter signatures verified?

A voter is attesting that their statements are true, that they are a US citizen, and that they are registered at the address that is provided when they sign the application. This voter’s signature is then verified by trained staff in our Qualified Voter File, Michigan's maintained voter database.
