Haslett Road Corridor Pedestrian Safety Improvements

On Monday, August 31, Meridian Township and the Ingham County Road Department held a public meeting for the Haslett Road Diet and Safety Improvement Project, and related trail and pathway projects along the Haslett Road corridor.

The purpose was to gather public input to help inform the future design of the Haslett Road project from Park Lake Road to Marsh Road.

Project Information:

In response to public input and to improve safety, the Township conducted a traffic study and crash analysis of the entire Haslett Road corridor from late 2025 through the spring of 2026. This study will help inform ways to calm traffic and increase safety for all users.

One finding of the study was that Haslett Road, from Park Lake Road to Marsh Road, is a viable candidate for a road diet. Road diets improve safety for all roadway users by reducing vehicle-to-vehicle conflicts, calming traffic, and creating a safer environment for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Possible pedestrian safety improvements to consider include adding pedestrian crosswalks along the Haslett Road corridor at Westminster Way, near the Parkwood YMCA, Boise Ile Drive, Bayonne Avenue, and Benson Drive. These crosswalks could include flashing light systems and/or pedestrian refuge islands.

To further improve pedestrian safety, the Township recently completed construction of the American House Meridian Pathway. This new off-road trail connected the existing Inter-Urban/MSU to Lake Lansing Trail with the pathway on the south side of Haslett Road at the Benson Drive intersection (shown in green on the map linked below).

Once a safe crossing can be established at the Haslett Road/Benson Drive intersection, the trail will be extended north through Hillbrook Park to connect with Lake Lansing Road (shown in purple on the map linked above).

In 2027, the Township will also be constructing a pathway along the south side of Haslett Road from Okemos Road to Park Lake Road (shown in green on the map above). This project will be funded in part by a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant that the Township received in October of 2025.

Once this pathway is constructed, a contiguous pathway will run along the north and south sides of Haslett Road from the city limit of East Lansing to Copper Creek Drive/Bird Farm Lane in Meridian Township.

UPDATE (8/26/2026)

The new off-road pathway connecting the Inter Urban Pathway to Haslett Road is now open.

Once a crosswalk can be established at the Haslett Road and Benson Drive intersection, the Township plans to construct a future trail directly north through Hillbrook Park to Lake Lansing Road.

This new off-road pathway was constructed using 775 square yards of steel retaining wall, 520 feet of drain pipe,100 tons of aggregate material, 790 square yards of concrete, and a 37-foot boardwalk.

UPDATE (2/5/26)

Equipment has been deployed across the Haslett Road corridor to collect traffic and pedestrian counts. The data will be reviewed, and we should have an update regarding our findings in March or April 2026.

Construction of the American House Pathway, an off-road trail, will link the existing Inter-Urban/MSU to Lake Lansing Trail, with the pathway on the south side of Haslett Road at the Benson Drive intersection. Construction began in late 2025 and is anticipated to be completed by June 12, 2026.
