Local Roads Program

In order to establish a reliable revenue source for reconstructing and maintaining Meridian Township's 153-mile network of local roads, the Township proposed a road millage bond on the August 2019 ballot.

The voters approved this 10-year millage bond at a rate of 1.9429 mills. Over the course of the 10 years (2020-2029), the millage bond will invest $35.25 million in the Township’s Local Roads Program. The Township also invests $280,000 annually from its General Fund, and the Ingham County Road Department invests $335,000 annually (increased from $172,500 beginning in 2023).

Crack Fill Notice - July and August

As part of Meridian Township’s Local Road Program, all the roads colored in orange, green, and purple shown on this map are scheduled to receive crack sealing preventative maintenance between July 6 and August 1. Please avoid parking on these roads between July 6 and August 1.

Sealing the cracks while the road is still in relatively good condition will help slow deterioration and extend its life.

When water penetrates cracks and seeps beneath the asphalt surface, it can cause significant damage over time. During the fall/winter and winter/spring transitional periods, water will freeze in the cracks, causing major deterioration to the surrounding asphalt. Additionally, as water runs through the cracks and saturates the road base, the asphalt near the cracks will begin to flex and break down under heavy vehicular loads.

The crack-sealing work is a quick, continuous process. The contractor performing the work is Wolverine Sealcoating, a company that has previously completed similar contracts for the Township.

The Township’s contractor will crack-fill each road half-width at a time, using the other half of the road to maintain traffic. They will have workers on-site directing traffic to ensure everyone can safely navigate the work area.

Please do not drive between cones and/or around barricades as these areas are closed because the crack fill has not fully cured yet. Crack fill can get into your tire treads and be difficult to remove if it has not fully cured. If a motorist has ignored traffic controls (i.e., gone around cones, barricades, etc.), the Township will not reimburse damages.

If you need to leave your driveway shortly after crack fill is applied and the road in front of your driveway is closed, please check with the crew on site to see whether the crack fill has cured enough to drive over. On the date that your road is scheduled to be crack-filled, you can proactively move vehicles to an adjacent road that is not scheduled to be treated with crack fill that day to avoid having to wait 10-30 minutes to leave your driveway. If you are returning home while the road in front of your home is closed, please park on the nearest open street and wait until the road reopens.

The construction schedule will change based on weather. To review the most current schedule, please visit the Construction Updates section below.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to improve your neighborhood and our entire community.
