Burn Permits

Two types of burning are allowed in Meridian Township: recreation fire and open burning.

Both types of burning require a permit to be on file with the Meridian Township Fire Department. Burn permits are free to obtain and valid for one year.

For questions, please contact the Meridian Township Fire Department at 517.853.4700.

*Outdoor pizza ovens do not require a burn permit

Types of Permits

Recreational Fire Permits:
  • The purpose of a recreational fire is to cook food or gather around for pleasure.
    • A recreational fire is considered a below-ground-level hole with non-combustible sides that can contain a fire. A fire table would also count as a recreational fire.
  • Residents can apply for a recreational fire permit online at the following link: Recreational Fire Permit Application
Rural Residential (RR) Open Burning Permits:
  • Properties zoned rural residential (RR) and over one acre in size are eligible for an RR Open Burning Permit.
  • Open burning is limited to only those materials grown on the lot.
  • To obtain an RR Open Burning Permit, please contact the Meridian Township Central Fire Station at 517.853.4791 and request a permit for the day you would like to burn on. If the conditions are appropriate, fire department personnel will come to the proposed fire location and inspect the site. If the site is approved, a permit will be issued for the year at no cost.

Requirements & FAQs

If you are going to burn a fire in Meridian Township, the following safety requirements must be complied with before burning:

  • All fires must be at least 25 feet from any structure
  • They must be contained in a ring, pit, or appliance
  • They must have a means of extinguishing and be in constant attendance by an adult
Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Can I have a fire to cook food?

Yes, cooking fires are permitted and should meet the requirements for recreational fires.

2. Can I have a small recreational fire in my backyard with my family?

Yes. Recreational fires should be limited to seasoned or dried natural wood. Burning of leaves, paper, bark, mulch, or rubbish is not allowed. This limits potential spread from uncontrolled embers and sparks.

3. Can I burn my leaves and other organic materials such as last year's plants, twigs and branches that have fallen?

No. At this time, we are asking the public to limit open burning. Burning yard waste and debris is the number one statewide cause of vegetation fires (wildfires) because it produces large numbers of uncontrollable sparks and embers.

4. I have a natural gas or LPG fire pit or tabletop ring. Can I use that?

The answer is yes, but it depends. These appliances are often self-contained and are not intended to burn any other fuels (e.g., paper, wood). If yours does burn these other fuels, we ask that you refrain from using them.

5. What is the big deal with burning? Everything is wet…

While it may appear that everything is wet, with the grass greening and plants coming up, this is far from true. The relative humidity is very low, the wind is relatively steady, and the sun is out. All of this leads to extremely low moisture content in these materials, increasing the ease with which they will ignite and spread rapidly. It only takes a small spark to ignite disaster.

6. Can I burn old construction materials or waste in a burn barrel?

No. Burning these materials violates local, state, and federal laws. They also spread fire by emitting sparks and embers. Burn barrels using dried firewood for heating or cooking are allowable if provided with proper screening.

7. I have some old boxes and papers I want to destroy. Can I burn those?

No, these items are considered trash and waste. They should instead be shredded and taken out with the trash or recycled. Burning these items creates large amounts of sparks and embers.
