MSU to Lake Lansing Trail Project

This project will create a continuous trail system from the Lansing River Trail, through MSU's campus, and out to the Ingham County Parks around Lake Lansing.

Once completed, the trail system will provide direct access to several Meridian Township facilities and safe, enjoyable paths for non-motorized commuters between MSU and the Township.

Construction of multiple segments began in Spring 2021. Phase I opened to the public in December 2023, and Phase II opened in September 2024. Planning and designing for Phase III is still underway.

UPDATE 7/30/24

Phase II of the MSU to Lake Lansing Trail construction has been delayed due to the major storm events we recently experienced and the ongoing precipitation we are experiencing at regular intervals.

We are still waiting for some areas to dry out before our contractor can complete the necessary mitigation activities. Once the mitigation activities are complete, the contractor will schedule the paving of the trail.

We currently anticipate that Phase II of the MSU to Lake Lansing Trail will be opened in August or September. A map with a description of each phase can be found below:

MSU to Lake Lansing Trail Construction Schedule

We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to complete Phase II of the MSU to Lake Lansing Trail.

UPDATE 3/18/24

Phase II construction is in progress. The Township anticipates that Phase II will open to the public in either June or July of 2024.

UPDATE 12/8/23

Phase I of the MSU to Lake Lansing Trail is now open to the public.

UPDATE 8/24/23

Meridian Township currently anticipates that Phase I construction of the MSU to Lake Lansing Trail will be completed in October or November of 2023.

Phase I construction began in December of 2022 and was initially anticipated to be completed in September of 2023. Construction of Phase II, which was originally anticipated to begin in March or April, will begin in late August.

We currently anticipate that Phase II construction will be completed by June of 2024. The project schedules for Phase I and Phase II construction were impacted by delays the Township experienced in obtaining state permits.

UPDATE 5/16/23:

  • Phase I has been underway since December of 2022 and is expected to be completed in July to September of 2023. Phase I is approximately one mile long and begins on the north side of the Hagadorn Road/Shaw Street. intersection and concludes at the Grand River Avenue/Park Lake Road intersection.
  • Phase II construction is expected to begin in late May of 2023 and should be finished by year end 2023. It will add 1.2 miles of trail beginning near the Grand River Avenue/Campus Hill Drive intersection and conclude near the Okemos Road/Gaylord C. Smith Court Intersection.
  • Phase II construction will cost approximately $730,000 and is funded by the Ingham County Trails and Parks Millage and the Township Pathway Millage. Phase I has been expected to cost $3.37 million and has partially been funded by a $1.7 million federal Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) grant acquired by Meridian Township, with the rest being funded by the Ingham County Trails and Parks Millage and the Township Pathway Millage.
  • The northern end of the Phase II pathway will continue use of the existing 10-foot-wide pathway on the east side of Okemos Road to the inter-urban pathway. This has since been widened by the Township in order to further accommodate a variety of uses.
  • Phase III will enter the planning and engineering stage in 2023, this will complete the pathway and be the final phase of the MSU to Lake Lansing trail. Once this project is completed it will add approximately 6.75 miles of trail systems to Meridian and the surrounding communities.

UPDATE 7/8/22:

  • All land acquisitions for Phase I and IIa have been completed. The Township is currently working with CN Railroad for approval to finish Phase IIb in the railroads right-of-way.
  • The Township is hoping to acquire bids in August for Phase I. The engineering plans have been finalized and are in review with MDOT. A TAP grant was secured through MDOT, which is why the bid process must go through MDOT for this phase.

  • The Township is currently working to finalize the engineering plans for Phase IIa. The project should be in the bid process by the end 2022 or early 2023, allowing the ability to construct Phase IIa in 2023.

  • Engineering for Phase III has not started, but the Township is working with Consumers Energy to secure the easements.

Phase IIa consists of approximately 1.2 miles of asphalt trail, following an existing 2-track through the Township Land Preservation property between Grand River Ave. and Okemos Road, along the south side of the CN RR tracks. The proposed route will connect through the Campus Hill Apartment complex out to Grand River Ave. Engineering staff are working with DTN to obtain an easement, as well as working on the trail design.

Plans are being finalized. Anticipate putting out to bid in March for Spring or Summer 2021 construction.

This project will reduce the frequency and impact of area flooding. The ADA-compliant sidewalks will be more accessible for all users.

Phase IIb consists of approximately 0.5 miles of concrete pathway widening. The existing pathway is 7-feet wide and must be widened to 10-feet in order to comply with Ingham County and MDOT standards. This will connect Phase IIa to the existing Interurban Trail, getting us one step closer to the complete MSU to Lake Lansing Connector Trail.

Engineering staff performed the design and any necessary easement acquisition in Summer of 2021. The contract is currently anticipated to go out to bid later this year for Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 construction.

Also associated with the Nemoka Drain project, we applied to the Ingham County Trail Millage for funding to widen/install a 10-foot wide pathway along Shaw Street, from Haslett Road all the way to Lake Lansing Park South. Specifically, this would widen the existing five-foot wide sidewalk along the east side of Shaw, from Haslett to Lake Drive. Additionally, this would install a new 10-foot wide pathway along the west side of Shaw, between Lake Drive and Lake Lansing Road. The application round is due to go before the Ingham County Board of Commissioners in late ’20 or early ’21.

While not contiguous with the portions of the MSU to Lake Lansing Trail that we are currently working on, we wanted to minimize any duplication of effort, and certainly the disruption to residents in the area, by coordinating construction as closely as possible with the Nemoka drain project. We anticipate that with a favorable outcome at the Ingham County BOC, we will be able to construct the pathway in spring/summer of 2021. Ultimately, this project is planned to connect south across Haslett Road and then southwest to the existing Interurban Trail, which is part of the larger MSU to Lake Lansing Connector Trail.

UPDATE 2/22/21:

Based on priorities and workload, this project is now anticipated for 2021 or 2022 construction.

UPDATE 10/16/20:

We anticipate plan development and easement acquisition over the winter, with bid and construction in 2021.

This project would complete a loop in the the East Lansing Northern Tier Trail system. The City of East Lansing is currently constructing two separate legs of their Trail; through the Albert A. White Memorial Park, just west of the Whitehills Elementary School, and along Towar Avenue from the northern Township-City border to the existing City trail-head. The work will involve a 10-foot wide concrete pathway to connect from Lake Lansing & Birch Row, north to the Township border. Township Engineering staff will be performing the design and easement acquisition through the summer. The contract is currently anticipated to go out to bid later this year for Fall '20 or Spring '21 construction.

Meridian Township received notification in December 2020 of its successful grant proposal from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund for acquisition of a parcel to enhance the entrance to Nancy Moore Park and to create a hub for the upcoming MSU to Lake Lansing Trail. This property will provide a vital link and opportunity to build a rest stop for trail enthusiasts and community members to explore and utilize the regional trail system. Funds for this acquisition will not be released until mid‐2021.
